With an emphasis on applications in "space, energy and environment" engineering fields, basic researches on magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) phenomena caused by a high pressure and a high-speed flow in space and fusion plasmas are being studied.

In space plasmas are observed prominent MHD phenomena such as anomalous heating in a solar corona, collisionless shock wave in front of the earth magnetosphere, magnetic reconnection in the earth magneto-tail accompanied by a violent aurora, astronomical jet from a rotating accretion disk around a black hole.

In magnetic fusion plasmas, magnetic reconnection and self-organized structure formation associated with a shear flow are also observed and still under intensive study to improve the confinement performance.

Research subjects currently covered:

  1. Production of a supersonic plasma flow and a space electric propulsion
    1. Acceleration mechanism of an magneto-plasma-dynamic (MPD) thruster
    2. Magnetic Laval nozzle characteristics for a thermal-to-flow energy conversion
    3. ICRF heating of a supersonic flow for a specific impulse and thrust control
    4. Development of a high-density Hall current thruster
  2. Basic researches on MHD Phenomena in space and fusion plasmas and an advanced fusion confinement concept
    1. Flow-shear stabilization of low-frequency instabilities
    2. Interaction of a supersonic plasma flow with gas-, solid- and magnetic targ
    3. Propagation of a large amplitude Alfven wave in a fast flowing plas
    4. Formation and stability of a self-organized MHD vortex with a high speed flow
  3. Development of plasma diagnostics
    1. Imaging reflectometer by use of a ultra-short-pulse mm-wave
    2. CRD (Cavity-Ring-Down) laser interferometer
    3. Time-resolved spectroscopy by use of a CCD detector
    4. Ultra-fast-CCD framing camera
    5. Mach probe and micro-chip magnetic probe
    6. Time-of-flight (TOF) neutral-particle-energy analyzer

    1. Discharge in a flowing liquid for a water purification
    2. Flow-stabilized, atmospheric-pressure glow discharge
