The Hirano group is pioneering the interface between nanotechnology, electronics, and biology for developing biomedical devices and studying the function of biological systems. At the molecular scale, we use artificial phospholipid bilayers containing ion-channel proteins to develop novel drug screening devices. At the cellular scale, we engineer materials' surface to design neuronal networks from living cells and study neural information processing. We also pursue the application of biological and organic molecules as an alternative for inorganic materials in electronic devices and sensors.
