University of Montpellier II, France

Single molecule experiments change the perspective of biochemistry studies on biological enzyme kinetics and dynamics, and such new information becomes relevant not only to biology, but also to the physics that investigates non equilibrium phenomena on molecular scale and complex matter. In this series of lectures, the following topics will be covered:

(1) the physics of single molecule experiments,
(2) the theoretical physics involved in modeling single or collective systems of biological macromolecules, and
(3) nanosciences in biology and impact for new technological applications.

演題: 「Non-equilibrium collective walks on molecular highways」
Andrea Parmeggiani, Ass. Professor

Laboratoire de Dynamique Moleculaire des Interactions Membranaires Normales et Patologiques
University of Montpellier II, France Biological phenomena provide interesting examples in order to study non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. I will present a 1+1-dimensional lattice gas model describing the general properties of intracellular transport driven by motor proteins moving along a molecular track. The related phase diagram, emerging from the analytic solution of the mean field approximation in the stationary state, shows novel properties with respect to known models such as the "totally asymmetric simple exclusion process". Specific features, emerging from the 3+1-dimensional generalization of the model (i.e. including particle dynamics in the reservoir) and from the biological context, will be then discussed.

演題: 「Direct Brain-Computer Communication: Basic principle and applications of the Graz-BCI」
Dipl.-Ing. Reinhold Scherer

Laboratory of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI-Lab)Institute for Knowledge Discovery, Graz University of Technology, Austria A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a system that allows its user to interact with his environment without the use of muscular activity as, for example, hand, foot, or mouth movement. This would mean that a specific type of mental activity and strategy are necessary to modify brain signals in a predictable way. These signals have to be recorded, analyzed, classified, and transformed into a device control signal. The Graz-BCI uses motor imagery and associated oscillatory electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from the sensorimotor cortex for device control. As a result of research in the past 15 years, the classification of Event-Related Desynchronization/Event-Related Synchronization (ERD/ERS) patterns in single EEG trials during motor execution and motor imagery forms the basis of this sensorimotor-rhythm controlled BCI. The major frequency bands of cortical oscillations considered here are the 8-13 and 15-30 Hz bands. The aim of this talk is to describe the basic methods used in Graz-BCI research and outline possible clinical applications.
