Tohoku University Electro-Related Global COE program: “Center of Education and Research for Information Electronics Systems” was granted and started from the fiscal year of 2007 as the succeeding 21st Century COE Program. Distinguished professors from three Graduate Schools, which are the Graduate School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Information Sciences, and the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC), actively participate in this program. The center has three areas of research and development: (A) Information and Device Fundamentals (new physical properties, materials, process, evaluation/analysis, semiconductor, storage, optics, display, software, fundamental theory, and etc), (B) networking (wireless and optical technologies, algorithm, architecture and etc), and (C) intelligent information systems (autonomous recognition and prediction of the environment, biometrics and etc).

One of the important functions in this center is the “ν-QI School”, which is an education and research program based on the Quadruple I's, i.e., Interdisciplinary, International, and Interchange between Industry and academia to promote active researchers and engineers in NT-IT fields throughout the world.

Outstanding students selected from the world-wide who are working in the above research areas will be provided the following financial supports:

(1)
Oversea travel and hotel expenses for attending international workshops, short courses and discussions.
(2)
Expenses for taking English capability examinations, TOEIC, TOEFL, etc to improve the technical English ability.
(3)
Stipend for Research Assistant (RA). Each RA will be provided a stipend of maximum 130,000 yen per month. About 60 RA's are selected from among Ph. D. students.
(4)
Research grant for RA's groups. The maximum amount of the grant will be 500,000 yen per year

We recommend a student who wishes to enter the graduate school and have a strong interest in research relating to the above mentioned new generation information electronics systems to take the entrance examination of the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Communication Engineering, the Graduate School of Information Sciences, and apply to attend the ν-QI School, and lead a fulfilling life as a graduate student.
